“Workshops” are small group-based, interactive-oriented classes that promote participation as well as instruction. Availability of workshops varies from session to session and Center to Center.

The New York Times
Reading the newspaper can be both an enlightening and formidable task. The goal of this workshop is to make it more of the former and less of the latter. Ultimately, we want to make reading the newspaper a lifetime habit for students. Workshops are divided into different groups based on grade levels.

Discourse & Rhetoric I: Communication Enrichment
Discourse & Rhetoric I is a workshop designed to help junior high school students discover their own particular “voice” for speaking and writing. By teaching students how to analyze texts and speeches, the instructor helps students build stronger reading, writing, and speaking skills and tools, and thereby increase their own self-awareness and confidence in self-expression. This workshop entails intensive practice through writing exercises, journal writing, audio-visual presentations, and group discussions.

Discourse & Rhetoric II: Writing for High School
Discourse & Rhetoric II is a workshop designed to help high school students develop indispensable skills for analytical writing. This workshop should help students learn not only how to write effective and powerful essays and papers but also how to generate and articulate a well conceived opinion.
♦ Recommended for Grades 9 – 12
Discourse & Rhetoric III: Intro to College Expository Writing
The goal of Discourse & Rhetoric III is to help students make the transition from the writing they’ve done before college to the writing that will be expected of them in college. The workshop emphasizes analytical writing: reading closely and analyzing texts; using evidence; questioning and engaging with sources; developing ideas and structuring arguments; and communicating those ideas to readers in clear, effective prose.

College Application Essay
This workshop provides instructions and recommendations on how to write essays for college applications. Those enrolled in College Consulting will also be enrolled in this workshop.
